The Spinney Memorial Trust

The Spinney Memorial Trust

I would not have made the Great Britain team without the support of the Spinney Memorial Trust (Hugo Scott)

The Spinney Memorial Trust, a registered charity, was established in 1990 by a group of Old Clayesmorians in memory of David Spinney, a much-loved history teacher and Clayesmore Housemaster. Its principal objective is to provide bursaries and grants for the educational benefit of Clayesmore’s pupils and it is funded by Old Clayesmorians.

The Trust seeks to support individual pupils in a way that enables them to do things that, without the Trust’s financial support, they may not be able to do. In recent years, the Trust has been able to support a widening range of projects and activities with grants of up to £1,000 for each pupil applying for a grant. The Trust has provided grants to over 90 Clayesmorians to date, with a total value of over £50,000.

The grants have helped to fund a wide range of projects including courses for music, drama, languages, various sports, UN Leadership conferences, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, design projects, sculptures and even a course for aspiring jockeys!

The Trust relies entirely on the generosity of OCs for its fund. We believe that by supporting the individual needs of Clayesmore’s pupils in the way we do, we foster a spirit of individualism and self-reliance and help to keep alive the distinctive nature of Clayesmore’s education.

Trip to China with the National Youth Choir

Former pupil Lauren travelled to China with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, on a trip partly funded by the Spinney Memorial Trust.

“Our tour to China and Hong Kong was an unforgettable adventure, and I have benefitted so much from my experiences, both musically and as a result of opening my eyes to a completely different culture. It has fuelled me with confidence and inspired me to work hard studying music at university this coming year. Working with the National Youth Choir teaches me extraordinary life skills, such as professionalism, team work, and the importance of commitment, and I cannot thank the Spinney Trust enough for all their support that enabled me to make the most of this experience.”

Tall Ships Race Participation

Archie was offered a place on the 2018 Tallships race from Sunderland to Esbjerg in Denmark.

The race would count as the residential element of his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award but costs were expensive.

“Sailing on board ‘Maybe’ in the Tall Ships Race 2018 has been perhaps the most enhancing experience of my life.  I am so grateful for this adventure, as it has changed me for the better and I will never forget it.”

Raleigh International

The Trust helped Bia fulfil her dream of travelling to Costa Rica to work with Raleigh International. She helped rangers in La Cangreja National Park maintain the trails, and repair and rebuild bridges to improve accessibility to the park and tourism in the area.  She also worked to educate the local community about how to live sustainably and support the environment.

Dressage Tuition

Jemima is a dressage rider and made her international debut at Hickstead in July 2019.  The Trustees awarded a grant to enable her to have tuition from a British Team Coach.
