Musicians in Years 9 – 13 entertained us to an evening of musical highlights on Tuesday 29th September in the Junior & Senior Musicians’ Concert.
Rebecca’s sparkling flute playing opened the concert with John Rutter’s “Prelude” from his Suite Antique. Rebecca was one of four flautists to perform solos, alongside Cecilia and her lilting rendition of “On the Bayou”, Rachel’s confident and tuneful “The Mermaid” and Josefine’s assured performance of Marcel Poot’s “Sicilienne” which displayed great musical maturity.
Congratulations go to pupils who performed on more than one instrument, notably Logan with his outstanding vocal rendition of Handel’s “But thou didst not leave”, from the Messiah, and his performance on the clarinet of Paul Reade’s “Prelude”, from the Victorian Garden Kitchen Suite. Emily gave an evocative performance on the violin of Viardot’s “Berceuse” and achieved a stylish rendition of her part in the piano duet, “Just another day”, by Pam Wedgwood, performed with her father, Mr Kerr.
It was also very encouraging to hear such good performances from our youngest musicians in the senior school; Year 9 pupils, Saskia, Robyn and Ted all sang their solos with huge confidence, demonstrating their already good experience performing in front of an audience.
Tyler conveyed the character of the “Cossack Dance” superbly on the violin and Ava’s singing had the audience captivated with “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. Callum’s exciting and apt performance of “633 Squadron” on the tenor horn was followed in the programme by a contrast with Phoebe’s virtuosic electric guitar playing in Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” and it was wonderful to hear Maxi’s sonorous bass voice in the American Folk Song, “Long Time Ago”. An absolute entertainment highlight was the rounding off of the concert by Mats singing “If I were a Rich Man”, from Fiddler on the Roof!
A huge congratulations go out to all students involved.
