EDI Committee: Exploring What Inclusion Really Means

The EDI Committee held its first meeting of the year this week, bringing together students who generously volunteer their time and ideas to help make our school community as welcoming, respectful and inclusive as possible.

The evening centred on a thought-provoking discussion about what it really means for a school to be inclusive. Members considered what inclusion looks and feels like in everyday school life, and reflected on the idea that treating everyone exactly the same does not always mean treating everyone fairly.

This led to an engaging conversation about the difference between equality and equity. While equality is about giving everyone the same opportunities and resources, equity recognises that different people may have different needs and that sometimes additional or different support is needed to ensure everyone has a fair chance to participate and succeed.

Students shared their own perspectives and considered how these ideas might apply within our school community. The discussion highlighted the importance of listening to different experiences, recognising barriers and thinking carefully about how we can make sure every student feels valued, respected and able to contribute.

The EDI Committee plays an important role in helping us continue these conversations and turn ideas into positive action. We are always keen to welcome new members, so if you have ideas, questions or simply want to be part of the conversation, we would love to hear from you.
