Year 8 bow out in style at PopFest

Clayesmore Year 8 PopFest, which was packed with stellar numbers, both composed by pupils and covers.

What a fabulously entertaining PopFest the Year 8 provided Prep School pupils, staff and some parents. Prep Music Teacher Mrs Judy Coplan writes:

“Staged for the first time in the summery new venue of Clayesmore’s North Lawn Marquee, PopFest 2018 provided the perfect occasion to showcase the extraordinary musical talents of our Year 8 children on the last Friday of term. This popular, pupil-directed event played to an enthusiastic audience of children and staff and was a most enjoyable and relaxing way to enjoy a very warm June afternoon. Nearly every member of Year 8 was involved in the impressive show, featuring a record breaking 21 musical performances and confidently compered by Angus A, Evie A and Charley P.

“The first set featured ten original pieces composed in class music lessons during the term. These songs reflected the full range of emotion from gentle ballads with a moving personal message through to the humorous and frankly surreal. Those present are unlikely to forget ‘Watermelon’ with the ceremonial dispatch of the watermelon at the conclusion. Particularly impressive was the fact that many of these items were also performed entirely by the pupils with no adult help, a real sign of the musical strength and confidence of this particular year group.

“The ‘covers set’ was also hugely enjoyable with items ranging from Ed Sheeran, Stevie Wonder and Adele, through to Bruno Mars and Nirvana. New for this year were performances of songs which the children had learned in other curriculum areas. ‘Oxbow Lakes’ proved that 8C had been concentrating hard in Geography, whilst Mrs Hart’s Maths set boys dedicated their ‘Circle Song’ to her. A large group of girls gave a charming rendition of Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ before our very own ‘Spice Boys’ performed a memorable finale with ‘Wannabe’. Henry M and Ollie L rose admirably to the challenge of musical stage management. Thanks must go to Richard Walker for his invaluable musical and technical work on this production and massive congratulations to every member of Year 8 involved. PopFest 2018 was hugely enjoyed by everyone there and will be long remembered!”
