Year 5 Girls Dorset County Swimming Champions
More Clayesmore Prep pupils have been crowned county champions recently – this time in swimming. Year 5 girls Daisy, Emily, Erin and Georgia represented North Dorset in the County Primary Swim Finals in the mixed stroke relay. They led from the start in their race and certainly deserved to be crowned Dorset Champions.
Georgia is also county champion in the individual 50m breaststroke. “After all the additional training she has put in the pool, she really deserved this result” said Clayesmore’s Swimming Director, Mrs Ali Pickford.
The rest of team Clayesmore did well too. Alongside the girls, Year 5 boys William, Alex, Luca, Ryan and George, as well as Year 6 boys Thomas and Fraser, had qualified in the North Dorset Regional round in March to represent North Dorset at the County Finals held at the Littledown Centre in Bournemouth last Saturday. The boys all swam relays, and in addition Thomas raced in the individual backstroke.
The performances of the Clayesmore swimmers certainly added to the strength of the North Dorset team, as North Dorset came third overall.
On the same weekend, another team of Clayesmore Year 6 swimmers competed at the ESSA English Schools Primary National Relay Finals, following their victorious swims at the South West Regional in April. Mrs Pickford writes:
“Four Year 6 pupils, Portia, Lottie, Charlie and Jimmy, represented the School and South West at the National Relay Finals on Saturday 16 June at the Pondes Ford Leisure Centre in Sheffield. This was the first time we have had a team make the National Relay Finals. The team competed in the freestyle relay and medley relay, which consists of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and front crawl. The day started with a parade of representatives from each region. Jimmy and Charlie were selected for this and collected the commemorative badges for the team.
“Their first event was the freestyle relay. Swimming in the first heat the team came fourth and improved their qualifying time by two seconds (1.03.57 entry time; finals 1.01.29). With two more heats to follow, it was a nail-biting wait to see if they made finals. After all the heats the team were ninth overall and made the ‘B’ finals. The team and coaches were over the moon, and after the finals the team held their place and finished the competition in ninth place – such a fantastic result as it was a Nationals Finals!
“Not all schools qualified in both relays but Clayesmore did and swam in the first heat of the mixed stroke relay. Lottie had a superb start with backstroke and touched first. Again they improved their time by one second and made the ‘B’ finals, coming ninth overall after heats and twelfth after the ‘B’ finals.
“What a fantastic weekend the Clayesmore Swim Team had with teams swimming at the English Schools National Finals and the Dorset County Finals. Congratulations to Daisy, Emily, Erin, Georgia, William, Alex, Luca, Ryan, George, Thomas, Fraser, Portia, Lottie, Charlie and Jimmy! They should all be immensely proud of their performances.”
