Words win prizes for Thomas in Year 6

Prep School Head of English, Suzanne Chinnock writes:

“Several Year Six pupils entered Blandford Rotary Short Story competition, now in its second year. The word limit was 1,500 for the under 18 category, giving the boys and girls lots of scope for creatively and plot development. We were delighted to discover that three of our young writers had made the shortlist: Jenny with her supernatural, spine-chilling story ‘The Bam’, Thomas with his mixed-up myth ‘Grounded by the Gods’ and James with his comical tale of a girl who has lots of ‘accidents’, namely, ‘Calamity Izzy’.

On Friday 7th October, the three shortlisted entrants were invited to The Corn Exchange in Blandford Forum to a public reading of their stories for an audience, along with the other finalists. Al three children read with confidence and conviction in front of a large audience, bringing their stories to life with lively expression and a strong sense of the writer’s voice. They were much praised by members of the audience and Rotary staff, and everyone sat spellbound as they delivered their stories. Thomas was runner-up, receiving a certificate and £10 book token, no small achievement for a ten year-old writer competing in an under-18 competition! Jenny and James also received certificates. Well done to all!”
