U16 Rugby team reach County Cup Semi-final

A report from Head of Boys’ Games Richard Miller

“Congratulations to this year’s U16A Rugby team who reached the Semi-final for the County Cup competition.

Early wins against Beaminster and Poole Grammar school meant that the boys were drawn to play local powerhouse Sherborne in the Quarter-final. An outstanding display of open, attacking rugby helped the boys to achieve a famous victory and filled them with confidence for the remainder of the term.

In the semi-final, things didn’t get any easier as we drew Bryanston, but Clayesmore had home advantage and hopes were high that the team could deliver their best rugby again whilst under pressure from strong opposition.

The first half was an exciting and close contest with neither side gaining real ascendancy. Clayesmore’s exhilarating off-loading game and strong, determined defence ensured they were only 5 points down at half-time despite playing into a strong wind.

Unfortunately for Clayesmore, as the second half developed, Bryanston started to dominate possession and territory. With the increased pressure created by defending for long periods, and tiring from the effort of the first half, Clayesmore began to lose concentration and discipline which resulted in a large number of penalties. Bryanston were able to pull away to finish as comfortable victors on the scoreboard although all agreed that the game had been a challenging contest.

Despite the disappointment of the loss, reaching the Semi-final of this competition for the first time in Clayesmore’s history and competing against larger schools from the area was a superb achievement and thoroughly deserved for this group of boys. They have worked consistently hard since arriving at Clayesmore to develop as both individuals and a team and their future as a rugby team looks bright for their remaining years at the school.”
