Two major concerts round off a term of music-making
Following on from the annual Battle of the Bands competition held at the start of the month, it was time for something completely different for our senior musicians, who performed two major concerts in the Chapel recently.
The first, a Choral Concert held on 12 March, featured the School Choir and Chamber Strings, with strong pupil solos in the evening’s centrepiece, Mozart’s Mass in C, “Spatzenmesse” (Sparrow Mass) and in Haydn’s “The Heavens are telling”. Other pieces performed included two versions of the Ave verum chorus (one from Mozart, the other from William Byrd), Locus iste (Bruckner), Evening Hymn (Henry Balfour Gardiner) and three movements of JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major. You can listen to recordings of the concert here.
The following week it was time for the annual Charity Showcase Concert, a chance for a wide variety of Clayesmore’s many ensembles to entertain and raise funds for charity. The programme was as varied as the instruments themselves, with everything from Pipe Band to the Close Harmony groups represented, performing some from Maroon 5 to Mendelssohn and Strauss.
One thing’s for sure, Clayesmore’s musicians know how to put on a great concert.
