“Scads” raise funds for OC awards

Former and much-loved art master and Chaplain of Clayesmore, the Rev Norris Scadding, who was on the staff from 1940 until 1962, is still helping our pupils from beyond the grave.

The recent auction of some of his paintings managed to raise over £1000, to be divided by the Spinney Memorial Trust, for its grants scheme, and the Scadding Art Prize, given out every year on Speech Day.

One happy purchaser was Old Clayesmorian, Peter Hartley (1957), who wrote to us:

“I just wanted to say how pleased I am to have acquired two watercolours by
Rev. Scadding. I remember him as a kind and empathetic person who always
tried to make one feel better about oneself, even if I was no good at
painting!
“I notice that these watercolours were painted just six years before I
arrived at the School and I find it hard to believe that was 67 years ago.
“The changes for the better that have taken place during that time are
quite remarkable. Wishing you all at Clayesmore continued success.”
