Phoebe leads the way with a Symphony of Sound for St Cecilia

Clayesmore’s Chapel was the setting for a wonderful concert given in honour of St Cecilia on Tuesday 7 November. Leader of the orchestra Year 12 pupil, Phoebe, led Britten’s ‘Simple Symphony’, performed by the Clayesmore Chamber Strings. The first half’s programme also included the magnificent Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor (the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony) and Handel’s Water Music Suite No. 2, both performed by the school orchestra. The second half of the concert showcased the talent of the Clayesmore Choral Society accompanied by the Clayesmore Festival Orchestra. In many ways the programme was a reprise of the choir’s summer tour to Berlin, featuring Caccini’s Ave Maria and Tambling’s Mass in G. Always one to keep the audience on their toes, Director of Music Ralph Kerr instigated a ‘Songs of Praise’ moment for the refrain of the Gloria, encouraging them to ‘beat the sound of the choir’.
