Now you see us… Now you don’t – The Final Chapter

Rehearsing and acting out their own scripts in English & Drama lesson.
Clayesmore’s Patron of Reading and Writing, the author Gillian Cross, was back for the culmination of her character-building workshops with Year 5. Prep Head of English and Drama, Mrs Suzanne Chinnock, describes how the pupils put everything they had learnt together for their final pieces:

“Tuesday saw the much-anticipated return of Gillian Cross to work with Year 5. The children had developed their shrinking characters even further in an earlier English lesson and were ready and eager for Gillian to help them bring these characters to life in their chosen settings around the Prep School grounds.

“Firstly, with Gillian’s help and expert guidance, the boys and girls created four comic-strip frames, complete with speech bubbles, and each capturing four separate incidents. Frame one saw the characters shrinking in the children’s chosen setting, encapsulating their individual reactions to this scenario. Danger was the theme of frame two, with the approach of an imminent threat. How would each character react and what dialogue would ensue? Frame three saw a plan emerge – the children had to decide how their characters would interact, who might be the leader and what decisions would be taken. Finally, frame four saw the plan executed – would things end badly or would all be well? Would the characters return to their normal size or remain small forever?

“The main focus of this session was writing apt dialogue to capture characters placed in an extreme situation, and what is more extreme than suddenly being shrunk! When the comic-strips were finished, the children took on the mantle of a specific character from their script and learned the dialogue in record time. These were rehearsed and performed creatively and with great confidence. In Year 5’s drama lesson on Saturday, we will return to these scripts, polish them and practise. The final sequences will be filmed and sent to Gillian for her feedback.”
