Josh at the English Schools Athletics Championships

Josh, in Year 9 in Clayesmore, won selection to English Schools Athletics Championships.

Following his Dorset Schools County champion’s title, a second place in the Junior Boys 800m at the South West Schools Championships, and previously gaining an English Schools qualifying time, Year 9 runner Josh selected to represent Dorset at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Our other two competitors at the South West Schools Championships were Alex (Y12) who came sixth in the Senior Boys 1500m, and Amy (Y11) who came eighth in the Intermediate Girls triple jump. It was very windy so not a great day for times in the running events but Amy managed a season best jump of 10.28m.

On the day of his heat Josh ran a fantastic 2.06.28, effectively making him the 13th fastest Junior Boy 800m runner in England.

Clayesmore coach Chris Humpage commented: ‘Qualification for the final is a bit cut-throat with only the first three from two heats and the two fastest losers qualifying. The English Schools Championships are the 4th largest athletics event in the world so qualification alone is a major achievement.”
