Heroes and Villains – Reading Crew Interactive Treasure Hunt

Prep Head of English and Drama, Mrs Suzanne Chinnock, writes:

“Three months in the making and pupil-generated and pupil-led, the Reading Crew’s interactive treasure hunt designed for Years 3 to 5 was both exciting and imaginative.

“Charlie (Charlotte R), the story guardian gave the youngsters their task, explaining how the storybook villains had captured the heroes and hidden them at different locations around the Prep School and its grounds. The children had to collaborate and use a magic Clayesmore Compass to solve the riddles and free the heroes, collecting their signatures.

“In a creative twist, each hero represented an attitude to learning. The collaborative George (Jenny A) from The Famous Five had been captured by two black-masked robbers (Lara M and Charles R). A fearsome Rumpelstiltskin (Joshua M) held captive the Miller’s Daughter (Megan D). Curious Lucy Pevensie (Lucy F) was guarded by the White Witch (Millie C). The formidable Bellatrix Lestrange (Sadie P) barred the way to the conscientious Hermione Granger (Holly W). The oh-so-considerate Paddington Bear (Ollie S) was in the pantry with a jar of marmalade but could not be released until Millicent Clyde (Maddison M) had been defeated. The courageous Matilda (Fifi C) was in the library, of course, but so was the daunting Miss Trunchbull (Lareina G).

“Years 3 to 5 participated with gusto, going from location to location, solving riddles on the way. Reading Crew members, in full costume, did a great job of staying in role, capturing their characters perfectly. The winners who completed the quest in the fastest time were awarded special prizes. There was time for a Reading Crew party at the end of term too!”
