Pre-Christmas German Exchange

Social Media is buzzing with communication in German and English between 20 Clayesmorians and 20 pupils from the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Kaarst, near Düsseldorf, who recently got to know each other. ‘I message Colin every day!’ said Will in Year 11. ‘I can’t wait for him to come over here’.
Back in December the group set off to join their exchange partners and arrived in the height of the Christmas Market season. The Clayesmorians, true to form, immediately embraced the idea of a full day’s schooling with their partners and were quickly integrated into German school life. The partnership between Clayesmore and the Georg- Büchner-Gymnasium goes back over 20 years and more recently has been developing beyond the regular programme of exchanges. Last year, Arthur, now in Year 13, spent a full term at the school. During the week in Germany, there was no time to get bored. The second day of the visit involved a trip to Bonn and the ‘Haus der Geschichte’ history museum.
Our students impressed the tour guide with their thorough knowledge of post-war German history. Students were also able to soak up the atmosphere at the Christmas Markets in Aachen and look down on Düsseldorf from the top of the ‘Rheinturm.’ Everyone enjoyed the week. That such strong friendships were formed so quickly between the German hosts and the English visitors, is a credit to both groups. The first leg of the exchange really could not have gone better and we look forward to our turn to host in March.
