Fierce but friendly competition at annual House Music Competition

Gate House are winners of the 2018 House Music Competition, after all five houses did battle for the coveted title on Thursday 18 October. It was standing room only for the event, and each house performed a Solo, Ensemble and House Unison Song in their choice of order, having drawn lots earlier in the day for the running order.

Wolverton started proceedings, with an effortless performance of Michael Hurd’s Concerto de Camera for Oboe, (I) Andante con moto by soloist Katie, followed by the house unison song, Salute by Little Mix, arranged by pupil Izzie. They rounded off their selection with an ensemble performance of The Hanging Tree, by Jennifer Lawrence, arranged by pupil Katie.

Next up was Manor, who started with their ensemble piece, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m yours, by Stevie Wonder, arranged by Arthur, this was followed by their house unison, Shotgun by George Ezra, again arranged by Arthur, they finished up with their house solo, Selling Sundry Goods, by Peixun Chen, performed by Arthur.

Then it was the turn of reigning champions, King’s. They began with their house solo, Breakfast in America, as sung by Supertramp, followed by their ensemble, Beyoncé‘s Halo, and finished up with Katie playing the house solo of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No.1.

Performing fourth were Gate, who began with their house solo, Harvey playing Czardas by Monti on the clarinet. Next up was their ensemble performance, Talk too much as sung by Coin, and rounding off with their unison song, Hot ‘n’ cold by Katy Perry.

Finally it was the turn of Devine, who began with their house solo, Alasdair serenading the audience with Michael Bublé’s I just haven’t met you yet, then the house unison song, All Star, as performed by Smash Mouth. The last performance of the night was Devine’s ensemble, Some nights, as performed by Fun.

Then it was up to the adjudicator, Mr Julian McNamara, to make some difficult decisions. After deliberating, he returned to deliver the hotly anticipated results, commending everyone for taking part and producing some “truly outstanding performances” at the event.

The final results for the evening were as follows:
