Drummond Cup 2016
Clayesmore vs Old Clayesmorians: 2 – 3 It was the first year for some time where those playing in the Drummond Cup hadn’t enjoyed doing so under bright and clear skies but, despite the hideous weather, the match went ahead with the OC side attempting to make history and claim a sixth consecutive win.
The game got off to a slow start, with both sides easing their way into the match. The School team was brightest in the first half and it was very clear early on that their fitness and the quality of the team had improved from previous years. This was made evident as they struck twice in quick succession. As the first half came to a close, they were 2 – 0 up while the OCs were having a hard time keeping possession and creating opportunities of their own.
The OCs needed some inspiration and found just that with a change in formation going into the second half. Two individual effects from two set pieces levelled things up and the first penalty shootout to decide the winners looked to be on. With only 10 minutes to spare, the OCs scored another to complete the dramatic second half turnaround. The School team did its best to fight back but couldn’t find the net and the final whistle came, to the despair of the 1st XI and the relief of the Old Boys. It was a very competitive match and much credit should go to the School side, which has a lot of promising talent and can look forward to a solid season. Ultimately though, it was the OCs who confirmed history with an excellent sixth title in as many years.
