ClayesMUN: debating the issues that matter

Our recent ClayesMUN was, once again, a brilliant success, with Clayesmore hosting some 90 pupils from eight other schools including Canford, Sherborne, Sherborne Girls, West Exe School, Bournemouth Collegiate, Glenmoor and Winton Academies and South Wilts Grammar.

The day started with an engaging talk from Dr Mary Myers about her career working in communications throughout the developing world. Dr Myers is an industry expert who has worked with a number of leading organisations such as UNICEF and the UN, providing great inspiration for the pupils as they entered a much anticipated day of debating.

Following the opening address, pupils were split into five committee rooms where they considered a number of topical issues including AI & Industrial Pollution, Embryonic Stem Cells & HIV/AIDS, Abortion & Capital Punishment, Gun Control & Role of Embassies and Disputed Territories & Organized Crime. The debates all ran very smoothly and were excellently lead by their respective  Chairs, whilst the media team were busy interviewing and filming delegates for live news broadcasts throughout the day.

After lunch, pupils moved to the chapel for the General Assembly. This year the GA was centred around a hypothetical series of events devised by Izzie M (Year 12) involving Russian military drones over Poland, a Russian deserter in the British embassy and a cocktail of toxic chemicals flowing down the river Ganges towards a large Hindu pilgrimage.

The quality of debate and conversation throughout the day was very impressive and testament to the thorough preparations of all participating pupils. This was further illustrated by the fact that at least one pupil from each school took away an award.

We would like to thank all those involved for contributing to an incredibly successful event and we are already very much looking forward to hosting ClayesMUN 2019!

Further congratulations go to the following schools for winning overall delegations:
