Clayesmore’s marimba starts to play

Puctured: Year 10 student Flo and Percussion Teacher Mr Shaun Rigby trying out the marimba.

Clayesmore’s music department have recently taken ownership of a marimba. The instrument was formerly owned by young percussionist Alex Pullen. Alex was a percussion finalist in this year’s BBC Young Musician of the Year. At 15 years old, he was the youngest of the five percussion finalists. Unfortunately, Alex, didn’t win on this occasion, but he played superbly well with a massive grin on his face throughout!  His performance in the televised percussion final can be viewed here.

The purchase of the marimba was made possible by donations made towards the school’s Musical Instruments Fund. Alex is glad to see that the marimba is going to a good home where, hopefully, lots of pupils will begin learning tuned percussion. Mr Rigby is looking forward to showcasing the marimba in the Prep School’s Summer Extravaganza on Monday 2 July and the Senior School’s Hampers & Champers on Wednesday 4 July. He is also offering free trial lessons to anyone who may be interested in learning the marimba.
