Ben sets the score
Upper Sixth Former, Ben H-D, recently found out that an original piece of film music he has composed was shortlisted for FilmBath’s FilmScore Final. His score was one of five selected by the FilmBath judges, who this year were Alastair King, originator of over hundred film, TV and video game projects, including Wonder Woman, Harry Potter, The Martian, Downton Abbey and Doctor Who; Hutch Demouilpied, a composer, sound designer and musician who recently completed the soundtrack to the feature film The Levelling; and Lillian Henley, who has written music for both contemporary film and silent films, as well as accompanied silent films at the British Silent Film Festival, Barbican Centre, Hoxton Hall and the Cinema Museum in London.
“It’s a superb opportunity for Ben since he is considering making a career in film music composition,” said Mr Ralph Kerr, Director of Music at Clayesmore Senior School.
Ben’s passion for music writing started when he won the Clayesmore Christmas Carol competition in his GCSE year with a composition to “The Shepherds’ Farewell”. He is taking Music Technology A-Level and plans to study Film Music at Leeds College of Music. It is a relatively new course, which offers a potential collaboration opportunity at the film score studio of the composer Hans Zimmer, based in Santa Monica, California. It is also the company behind scores for a number of successful live-action films including the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Gladiator, along with animated films such as the Shrek series.
Well done to Ben, and best of luck for a fabulous future in film.
