Artists’ visit to London: Tates Modern and British

Head of Art, Mrs Kirsty Mareau-Jones writes about our sixth form artists’ recent trip to London:

‘On Wednesday the 22nd of February the sixth form artists visited the Tate Modern and Tate Britain. The visit was designed around two major retrospective exhibitions. The Robert Rauchenberg exhibition at the Tate Modern and the David Hockney Exhibition at the Tate Britain. Both exhibitions were vibrant and diverse in their exploration of materials and surface. Rauchenberg’s work was mainly collage based. He used mostly found objects and materials and his work echoes strong political undertones of 1960’s America. The Hockney Exhibition moved through landscape and portraiture genres. It was a masterclass in colour and painting, and also in the exploration of new lens based media and new media. We had a fantastic day and felt that we had been in the presence of two greats!’
