The Plamenatz Philosophical Society
“The store of wisdom does not consist of hard coins which keep their shape as they pass from hand to hand; it consists of ideas and doctrines whose meanings change with the minds that entertain them.” John Plamenatz – Old Clayesmorian
John Plamenatz (OC) was a philosopher whose speciality was political theory, which he spent most of his academic life teaching at the University of Oxford. He was a Fellow of All Souls College, 1936–51, and from 1951 to 1967 a Fellow of Nuffield College. He returned to All Souls as a professorial Fellow in 1967 when he succeeded Isaiah Berlin as Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory.
The Plamenatz Philosophical Society will meet six times each year to discuss philosophical and ethical issues of real and enduring significance.
A short paper will be distributed the week before the meeting. The meeting will begin with a summary of the paper, highlighting the questions it raises. The meeting will then address these questions.
Students in all year groups are welcome.
