'That Certain Thing' a Clayesmore Hit Show
As certain as ‘That certain thing called The Boy Friend’, a Clayesmore theatre production is always a hit and none more so this week than with the performance of ‘The Boy Friend’ with its well loved lyrics and tunes. When Sandy Wilson first wrote the musical, Britain was still recovering from the effects of World War 2 and its setting in the carefree, decadent world of the French Riviera in the Roaring 20s was so appealing that it became one of the West End’s longest running musicals.
It’s a show which demands colour, energy and vigour and Sophie Toland’s production had those qualities in abundance. The large cast blended seasoned performers with lots of future stars from the lower years and they all sang and danced beautifully. Looking fabulous in Penny Daw’s vibrant costumes on Alan Peters’ vivid, Matisse-inspired set, they captured the spirit of the show perfectly and their obvious enjoyment spread to the packed audiences.
The big chorus numbers showed clearly what a close ensemble the cast had become and the whole company deserve the plaudits they received. It was a great evening’s entertainment and confirmed once again how much theatrical talent there is at Clayesmore at the moment. With the professionalism and dedication they showed in this production, many of this cast will go on to provide many more great evenings in the years to come.
