Home Economics
In year 9 a broad study of Healthy Eating is covered together with the teaching of basic cookery skills. Practical work is very much a feature of the eight week carousel and the boys and girls greatly enjoy the opportunity to eat what they produce! A cooking activity, each term, enables budding chefs to practise further skills and is open to all year 9.
At the end of the year pupils can choose whether to take the subject to GCSE. Those who do so gain a variety of skills in year 10 by cooking every week and learning more about food and nutrition. Year 11 starts with a coursework investigation where pupils choose to cook dishes that will show skill and understanding of healthy eating and nutrition.
At A-level a more theoretical approach is made covering the family and society, health, money management, housing and many contemporary issues – eg, homelessness and poverty. [Please note that although it is always possible to offer Home Economics to AS-level, we cannot always undertake to take pupils all the way through to A-level, so please check with us first if this is important to you or to your son or daughter.]
All in all, the department aims to help pupils to make informed and intelligent decisions about what they eat and how food affects their health and hopes that they will grow up to practise what they have learned in Home Economics lessons at Clayesmore.
