Welcome to Clayesmore
Message from the Head
Welcome to our website; I hope it manages to convey a sense of the Clayesmore spirit! In discovering Clayesmore you have uncovered that rare gem: a school which, through its commitment to an inclusive and holistic approach to education, manages to build a rigorous academic programme upon those essential human foundations of integrity, kindness, hope and service.
Clayesmore was founded in 1896 by Lex Devine; an educator and visionary whose belief in the transformative power of education provided redemption and hope for boys for whom previous educational experiences had often resulted in feelings of rejection and failure. Today, Clayesmore remains a school for all: a fully inclusive day and boarding school, with a strong family ethos for boys and girls from rising 3 to 18. Our vision for education goes beyond a ‘one size fits all’ approach, seeking instead to bring out the very best in every individual through intellectual and physical challenge as well as the development of those essential attitudes and values which will carry them securely onwards long after the safety net of school has been removed.
A man ahead of his time, Devine understood fully that a ‘good education’ was about far more than the process of filling empty vessels with knowledge, and that ethos remains true today. We are reminded of the old African proverb: it takes a village to raise a child. Well, I believe that Clayesmore is that village; a place where all our children are known and where opportunities for learning are wide and varied; a place where we fully understand that whilst excellent academic results must always be a priority they are only a part of the whole educational story. Here at Clayesmore, we seek to instil in our pupils an appreciation of the fact that that at the end of their life’s journey, they will be defined above all by the people they have become, the choices they have made along the way and the positive way in which they have touched the lives of others. Fundamental to the Clayesmore education is the belief that gentleness, hard work, honesty and a sense of duty to others is a sure route to a life of fulfilment and we make it our mission to provide the fertile soil in which these values and aspirations can take root.
From our carefully thought through curriculum to our awe-inspiring location in the heart of the stunning Dorset countryside, Clayesmore seeks to ensure that during their time here, each and every pupil will grow up experiencing that perfect blend of challenge, adventure and fun which in turn will equip them with confidence and ambition for life.
I am sure that from the minute you walk through our doors either to enter the senior school or the prep, you too, will feel the magic of Clayesmore.
Do please come and visit us: you will be very welcome.
